சுமார் 170 வருடங்களுக்கு முன் கோலாலம்பூரிலிருந்து குவாந்தான் நகருக்கு ​சாலை போடும் வேலை நடந்துகொண்டிருந்தது. ஒரு பெரிய மரத்தை ​வெட்டும்போது அதிலிருந்து இரத்தம் கசிந்தது.

அதே வேளையில் மரம்வெட்டிக்கொண்டிருந்த தமிழர் ஒருவருக்கு அருள் ​வந்து, அவர் அந்த மரத்தை வெட்டக்கூடாதென்றும் சாலையைச் சிறிது ​தூரத்திற்கு அப்பால் போடவேண்டுமென்றும் சொன்னார். அதைச் செய்ய ​மறுத்தார் ஆங்கிலேய மேற்பார்வையாளர். உடனே சிறிய குழந்தை ​வடிவுகொண்ட தழும்பு அந்த மரத்தில் தோன்றியது. அதைப்பார்த்து வியந்த ​மேற்பார்வையாளர் மரத்தை வெட்டாமல் சாலையை சிறிது தூரத்திற்கு ​அப்பால் போட உத்தரவிட்டார்.

அன்றிலிருந்து அந்த இடம் ஒரு புனித இடமாகியது. ஸ்ரீ மரத்தாண்டவர் என்ற ​பெயர் அமைந்தது. இங்கு தூய பக்தியோடு வருபவர்களுக்கு எல்லா ​நன்மைகளும் வந்து சேர்கின்றன. ஊனமுற்றோர் நடப்பது, ஊமைகள் ​பேசுவது, நோயுற்றோர் குணமாவது போன்ற அற்புதங்கள் பல இங்கு ​நிகழ்ந்து வருகின்றன.

அப்போதெல்லாம் இங்கு அடிக்கடி நிகழும் அற்புதம் என்னவென்றால், இந்தச் ​சாலையில் செல்லும் வாகனம் ஏதும் நிற்காமல் சென்றால் சிறிது தூரம் ​சென்றவுடன் ஓடமுடியாமல் நின்றுவிடும். கோயிலிலிருந்து விபூதியை ​தேய்த்தபின்தான் மீண்டும் ஓடும். பங்குனி உத்திரம்தான் இந்தக் கோயிலின் ​மிகச் சிறப்பான நாள். பல பக்தர்களின் வேண்டுதல்கள் நிறைவேறுகின்றன. ​அந்தக்காலத்தில் சுமார் 300 அர்ச்சனைகள் நடைபெறும். இப்போது 300,000 ​மேல் அர்ச்சனைகள் நடைபெறுகின்றன."

About 170 years ago, construction of the road from Kuala Lumpur to ​Kuantan was in progress here. When a large tree was being chopped, it ​started to bleed. One of the Tamil workers went into a trance at the same ​time. He said that the tree should be spared and the road laid a short ​distance away. The British supervisor refused. To everybody's ​astonishment a figure of a child appeared on the trunk of the tree. The ​supervisor was surprised and changed his mind. The road was laid away ​from the tree. The place became sacred, and it took the name of Sri ​Marathandava Bala Dhandayuthapani (Lord Murugan). Several true ​devotees have experienced miracles here. They are bestowed with good ​fortunes in their lives. The lame had walked, the dumb has spoken and the ​chronic sick - healed. These miracles are still occurring!

His temple was made up of zinc sheets and wooden planks. The usual ​miracle that occurred here then was, if any vehicle passes by this temple ​without stopping, it will stall a short distance later and will not restart ​until the Vibuthi (Holy Ash) from the temple is applied on it!

Panguni Uthiram (March/April) is the grand festival here. In those days ​there used to be around 300 'archanai's. Now the number exceeds ​300,000! ‎

Pangguni Uthiram is an auspicious day celebrated by the Shiva and Murugan devotees.As the ‘Panguni’ ​natchathiram coincides with a full moon, this day has witnessed many divine marriages such as the ​Thirukalyanam of Shiva-Parvati, Rama-Sita, Lord Murugan and many others.Temples usually prepare for ​a grand celebration of celestial weddings on this day.The festival is celebrated on the 12th month of ​the Tamil calendar, Pangguni, during which the moon “enters” the Uthiram constellation. During the ​celebration of Panguni Uthiram, devotees perform various religious rituals and recite sacred books, ​such as Kanda Shashti Kavasam and Kanda Puranam to seek blessings from Lord Murugan. They also ​carry a Kavadi, a decorated wooden or metal structure, to Lord Murugan's temple as an offering.

Maran walk is a spiritual and recreational walk from Batu Cave Selangor, Sri Subramaniar Swamy ​Temple to Sri Marathandavar Temple in Maran Pahang covering an estimated distance of 204km.
